Gottfried Honegger

 

Gottfried Honegger (1917-2016) spent his early childhood at the home of his grandparents in Sent, Unterengadin. 1932–33 attended the art academy (Kunstgewerbeschule) Zurich. 1933–36 trained as a window/interior designer. 1938 founded a graphic design, scenery design and photography studio, together with artist and graphic designer Warja Lavater, his future wife. Worked as a designer of signs, posters, official graphic art features and book illustrations; successfully specialised in exhibition design, among others for the economics section of the 1939 Swiss National Exhibition in Zurich; for the touring exhibition Mehr anbauen oder hungern, 1941; 1848–1948. Vom Staatenbund zum Bundesstaat, Helmhaus Zurich, 1948; Kunstform und Naturform, Kunsthalle Basel, 1958. As a graphic designer, lecturer, writer and co-editor of professional journals, helped shape modern Swiss graphic design.

 

1958–1960 lived in New York, contacts with leading avant garde circles around Al Held, Sam Francis, Mark Rothko. 1960 returned to Switzerland, lived in Zurich and Paris and worked full time as a freelance artist. Since 1970 intensive involvement in art in public spaces. Numerous commissions for space design, stained-glass panels, wall reliefs and sculptures, mainly in France (Dijon, Grenoble, Nancy, Nevers, Paris, Cathedral of Chartres, Cathedral of Liege Belgium), Germany (Braunschweig, Herford), the USA and Switzerland (Chur, Geneva, Maloja, Zurich); extensive exhibition work in Europe and the USA. 1987 co-founded the Stiftung für konstruktive und konkrete Kunst (Foundation for Constructive and Concrete Art), Zurich. 1990 founded the Espace de l’Art Concret in Mouans-Sartoux, southern France, together with Sybil Albers; concept development of exhibitions and events, deeply involved in art mediation and teaching activities. 1985 appointed Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, France; 1987 Kunstpreis of the City of Zurich; 1996 appointed Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres. 1998 Gottfried Honegger moved his main residence from Paris to Cannes, 2005 returned to Zurich. In 2004, the publicly accessible Albers-Honegger collection in Mouans-Sartoux was gifted to the French nation. 2007 exhibition to mark his 90th birthday at ETH Zurich, at the Haus Konstruktiv (Foundation for Constructive and Concrete Art), Zurich, and at the Museum Liner in Appenzell.

Honegger’s oeuvre evolved over substantial phases of work which express specific themes: tableau-relief, biseautage (panel paintings), volume, monoforme, structure, fragment (sculpture), tableau-espace and artefact (wall objects). Honegger combines the rational principle of constructive art, such as logic and system, with the non-predictable components of empathy and spontaneity, as well as random methodology. The principle themes of his work can be summarised as the synthesis of opposites, the exploration of colour (predominantly monochrome), the figure and its fragments (circle and square) and the formulation of volume and space.
